Final Installment of Live From Aspen…It’s Ben Bass

Wright.JPG

Is that Ben Bass with a homeless guy? Nope, it’s Ben Bass in Aspen with comedian Steven Wright. We sent Ben to the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado last week to get the goods on the hottest, trendiest and buzzworthy events. By sent, we mean he was going and we asked him to write about it. Check out his final installment after the jump.

Live From Aspen…It’s Ben Bass Part 3!

We asked good friend Ben Bass – who happens to be at the HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen (henceforth referred to as “USCAF”) to occasionally write back and let us know how things are going. Here’s a snippet of his third report:

a great short film can indeed make things happen for its creators’ careers. Take Ari Sandel, the young director you may have seen last weekend winning a Best Live Action Short Oscar for his Arab-Israeli musical comedy, West Bank Story. I saw that movie here in 2005 blowing the roof off a sold-out movie theater. Ari Sandel was funny and engaging during an audience Q&A and was kind enough to send me, a non-industry type, a copy of his movie on DVD. Two years later he’s got an Oscar and an agent at Endeavor, a top talent agency. His directing career is off to a fast start and his short (a USC student film shot on a tiny budget, no less) had a lot to do with it.

A comedy festival is a double-edged sword, at once thrilling and frustrating, because every show has the potential either to blow the roof off with raucous laughter or leave its audience quiet and disappointed. When you’re buying tickets, all you have to go on are promotional blurbs written by the groups themselves; it’s a crapshoot. How, for example, did I see four, count them four, sketch shows at the 2007 Chicago Sketchfest, and not laugh more than two or three times, yet somehow miss the several performances by a terrific sketch group, Summer of Tears?

We asked good friend Ben Bass – who happens to be at the HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen (henceforth referred to as “USCAF”) to occasionally write back and let us know how things are going. Here’s a snippet of his first report:

You’d think that after catching a cab to O’Hare at 4 a.m., you’d get to Aspen in time to catch your friends’ stage performance at 8 p.m. Chicago time. You’d be wrong. Because Aspen’s local airport has a short runway in a narrow valley, larger jets can’t land there and most travelers fly through Denver. This week a heavy snowstorm is hammering western Colorado, canceling most Aspen flights and wreaking havoc with travel and festival plans. With the easy 45-minute flight not an option, the only recourse was a six-hour bus ride, which was pleasant enough except that the riders were missing rehearsals, shows, meetings and review deadlines.

I Met My First Director

Zodiac1.jpg

I’ve met plenty fo directors, but non famous, since I moved here I’ve been excited to meet my first director. particularly Quentin and David Fincher, and I just might have my chance to meet both for Paul Preston is taking me to some special screening and reception for Zodiac tonight. I am a HUGE David Fincher fan. Now, I know that doesn’t seperate me from much of the population, who doesn’t like Fight Club with the exception of every girl? I will have to miss Quentin and The Mack and The Chinese Mack to go, but I’ve seen both of those anyway. But Saturday night I did meet my first director…
